Friday Face-Off – 7th October 2016

Friday Face-Off is an idea originally thought up by Books By Proxy which I stole from the fantastic The Tattooed Book Geek. The idea originally was to compare UK and US covers based on an assigned theme each week and choose the winning cover. I will be twisting it slightly: not specifically US and UK covers, just different editions.

This week’s theme is a cover that is predominantly black: “Consumed by the darkness within, it hides all our sins.

A little bit of searching covers and I found the perfect choice, from my favourite book series. My only difficulty is picking a winner!

Cover A:
darktowera

Cover B:
darktowerb

Cover C:
darktowerc

Cover D:
darktowerd

Cover E:
darktowere

And the winner is… COVER A!

I have to say though, this week’s pick was really tough for me to make. Cover A won out as for me it feels very atmospheric especially in the context of the books. While cover E was a close second, A edged it. I felt the perspective given by the angle gives a sense of scale and size to the titular Dark Tower. Cover D just didn’t get close for me – I never imagined the main character, Roland Deschain, as being remotely like Clint Eastwood, but feel this portrayal was too much like him. If you haven’t read the amazing The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, I cannot recommend it enough, and I for one will be seeing the film when it comes out!

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with my winner, or does one of the others work better for you? Let me know in the comments!

Next week’s theme: 14th October – “There was once a princess, who lived in the top of the highest tower” – a cover with a castle.

  1. I absolutely agree with you, cover A hints at the darkness of the series, very atmospheric especially knowing the story, cover D too bright and colourful considering the content is quite deep.

  2. I agree with Cover A. I haven’t read any Stephen King books, but have contemplated adding one to my TBR list.

    1. Stephen King is a fantastic author. IT is a fantastic read. Truely terrifying but amazing. The Dark Tower series is stunning, it’s more fantasy than horror!
