Friday Face-Off – 18th November 2016

Friday Face-Off is an idea originally thought up by Books By Proxy which I stole from the fantastic The Tattooed Book Geek. The idea originally was to compare UK and US covers based on an assigned theme each week and choose the winning cover. I will be twisting it slightly: not specifically US and UK covers, just different editions.

This week’s theme is a cover with a storm: “The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play. So we sat in the house. All that cold, cold, wet day.”

For this week’s cover I went for an apocalyptic tale called The Rain by by Virginia Bergin.

Cover A:
storm1

Cover B:
storm2

Cover C:
storm3

And the winner is… COVER C!

This book is the sequel to The Rain, where the world is beset by an apocalyptic event. When the rain falls, everyone touched by it, or who drinks the tap water dies. I felt C hinted at the darkness, while also pointing to the corrosive nature of the rain. I also think it is pretty clever that you can see some of the text through the corroded “holes”.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with my winner, or does one of the others work better for you? Let me know in the comments!

Next week’s theme: 25th November – “As old as the hills??” – a cover with mountains or hills.
