Friday Face-Off – 2nd September 2016

Friday Face-Off is an idea originally thought up by Books By Proxy which I stole from the fantastic The Tattooed Book Geek. The idea originally was to compare UK and US covers based on an assigned theme each week and choose the winning cover. I will be twisting it slightly: not specifically US and UK covers, just different editions.

This week’s theme is a cover featuring a demon or demonic creatures: “Hell is empty and all the devils are here”.

I have taken a few liberties with the definition of demon here using this definition: a source or agent of evil, harm, distress, or ruin. With that in mind, I selected H. P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu. I haven’t read this tale yet, but is definitely on my list.

Cover A:

25775619

Cover B:

25775612

Cover C:

10595273

Cover D:

51ONiiQ-JML

And the winner is… COVER B!

Covers C and D are fantastic – they show the size and power of the being that is Cthulhu, which I just love. Cover A is simple, which is effective in some ways, but doesn’t really catch my eye. Cover B though, while it doesn’t show the whole creature, the miniscule humans in the foreground along with the enormous clawed hands reaching, ready to drag the immense form out into the light of day. For me, it’s hugely effective.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with my winner, or does one of the others work better for you? Let me know in the comments!

Next week’s theme: 9th September – “Pack up your troubles…and…leave” – a cover with some form of luggage. I already have some ideas for this one!
