Friday Face-Off – 16th September 2016

Friday Face-Off is an idea originally thought up by Books By Proxy which I stole from the fantastic The Tattooed Book Geek. The idea originally was to compare UK and US covers based on an assigned theme each week and choose the winning cover. I will be twisting it slightly: not specifically US and UK covers, just different editions.

This week’s theme is a cover featuring a flower or flowers: “A bouquet for you m’lady.”
I don’t know too many books with so I was totally flying blind on this one. It did allow me to mix looking for a cover that I liked (and I’ll admit not too girly) and something that sounded interesting.

A tale of  an obsessed orchid collector in Florida and the crimes he will commit to get his hands on the rarest of them all, The Orchid Thief seemed a good choice.

Cover A

Cover B

Cover C

Cover D

And the winner is… COVER D!

I found covers A, B and C to be a bit bland for my tastes, just a simple, single flower head. D though, that worked for me. The simple nature of the cover, with the silhouette of the flowers just brought to mind the cheesy crime reconstructions of various documentaries, and seemed to fit the story.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with my winner, or does one of the others work better for you? Let me know in the comments!

Next week’s theme: 16th September – “Wee, sleekit, cow’rin, timorous beastie” – a cover featuring a beast or beast.

  1. I like cover A because of its simplicity. And the bright orange doesn’t hurt either. 🙂 D seems more sophisticated, but without reading the book i wouldn’t know if the the story fit the cover.
