The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Vol. 1) by Alan Moore

London, 1898. The Victorian Era draws to a close and the twentieth century approaches. It is a time of great change and an age of stagnation, a period of chaste order and ignoble chaos. It is an era in need of champions.

In this amazingly imaginative tale, literary figures from throughout time and various bodies of work are brought together to face any and all threats to Britain. Allan Quatermain, Mina Murray, Captain Nemo, Dr. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde and Hawley Griffin, the Invisible Man, form a remarkable legion of intellectual aptitude and physical prowess: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I purchased a copy of this book for my own reading.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was an obvious pick for my reading list. It’s by Alan Moore who I’ve grown to enjoy as a writer, and it’s set in an alternative Victorian era. Throw in a smattering of steampunk and I was already hooked.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore

A ragtag collection of famous Victorian characters, albeit fictional, are brought together to help pursue London villain Moriarty as he sets out on his crusade against the Limehouse Doctor. They’re a collection of misfits with their own unique talents and their own problems. But somehow, their disfunction also breeds an unusual harmony that sees them succeed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first outing in the series. From the new twist on known characters to a healthy dose of Victoriana and plenty of steampunk to keep me going, it was always set to be a winner. I’ll be adding the rest of this series to my TBR.
