Friday Face-Off – 26th November 2021

The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy and now hosted over at Lynn’s Books. The idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.

This week’s Friday Face-Off theme is a cover featuring a black hole: “The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a Black Hole that knows how to read.” The book for this week’s theme is The Black Hole by Alan Dean Foster

And the winner is… COVER A!

It’s a simple but effective cover. The spacecraft drifting towards the blackhole is in and of itself nothing too special, but coupled with the title in the vibrant red swirling into the abyss makes it far more interesting.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with my winner, or does one of the others work better for you? Let me know in the comments!

Next week’s theme is a cover depicting a windswept scene: “Purple sky. The Maester stood on the windswept balcony outside his chambers. It was here the ravens came, after long flight.”

  1. I liked seeing the different ways the title was angled and arched. With the several that added a 3D effect, I don’t think that gave more interest to the design — and with cover G, the effect makes the title harder to read. Also: the person in the hole on cover E feels creepy. I agree with you about cover A … the title is done in a simpler style, and the twisting effect is neat.
