The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy and now hosted over at Lynn’s Books. The idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.
This week’s Friday Face-Off theme is a cover depicting a picture within a picture: “A picture can tell a thousand words,
but a few words can change it’s story.” For this theme I have gone with My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing.
Cover A Cover B Cover C Cover D Cover E Cover F Cover G Cover H Cover I
And the winner is… COVER F!
This one tested me a bit this week! There were quite a few possible winners this week. I used a little creative interpretation on the whole picture in picture theme, and used the idea of a reflection. Quite a few are a bit creepy, but F stole it for me. The razor-sharp piece of glass with blood on it is the kind of thing to really catch my eye early on!
What are your thoughts? Do you agree with my winner, or does one of the others work better for you? Let me know in the comments!
Next week’s theme is a cover featuring a train or tram: “The only way of catching a train I have ever discovered is to miss the train before.”
Cover F for me too – the shard of glass could be revealing all sorts of scenarios, is the blood the person who is holding the shard or is it someone else’s??

Cover C seems almost cosy by comparison with the others. Fascinating to see them all together like this.

It really does, doesn’t it? It’s creepy when seen alongside the others that clearly look intimidation. I love this feature because you can see a range of different covers for the same book and see how varied they can be!

Yes it’s a great exercise and either it tells you a lot about the culture a translation is aimed at, or it tells you a lot about their budgeting for the edition. Fascinating.
