Friday Face-Off – 17th December 2021

The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy and now hosted over at Lynn’s Books. The idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.

This week’s Friday Face-Off theme is a cover that feels wintry: “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” This week’s book is Winter by Ali Smith.

And the winner is… IT’S A DRAW!

This week we have a three-way tie for the win. Cover A is vibrant, quite a contrast from the anticipated whites, greys, and blues to depict winter. The brighter colours almost nod to the hope of spring. Cover C on the other hand is the opposite. It depicts the bleakness of winter, the bare trees, and snow-covered ground. The third cover is Cover H. The bleak blues and greens of the skeletal trees against the black night sky and the crisp white snow combine to make a fantastic visual. In all three cases, I love the interesting art styles used.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with my winner, or does one of the others work better for you? Let me know in the comments!

Next week’s theme is a cover that is festive: “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”
