The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy and now hosted over at Lynn’s Books. The idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.
This week’s Friday Face-Off theme is a cover that depicts something creepy or scary to me: “I’m not afraid of death; I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” This week’s book is Heinrich Boll’s The Clown.
Cover A Cover B Cover C Cover D Cover E Cover F Cover G Cover H Cover I
And the winner is… COVER D!
I’m not a massive fan of clowns – thank you Pennywise/Stephen King – so that was always going to be my pick for this. Cover D was interesting to me. The darkness on the clown side and the ominous feel on the unmasked side is quite curious and also dark.
What are your thoughts? Do you agree with my winner, or does one of the others work better for you? Let me know in the comments!
Next week’s theme is a cover from a book that features magic: “Books are a uniquely portable magic.”
Cover F – The painted on smile of the clown face but the grim look show an inner side to him and makes you question what is going on behind the smile.

I’d like to see Cover B with the text moved out of the way. The photo looks intriguing, but the title placement throws it off. Otherwise, I agree with you about Cover D — the split face gets my attention. (As an aside, it’s wild how different Covers A and C come across to me … Cover A feels menacing, and the clown in Cover C feels just mischievous.)
