Friday Face-Off – 5th July 2019

The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy and now hosted over at Lynn’s Books. The idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.

This week’s theme is a cover that features something or someone historic: “The question of whether or not we are alone in the universe… has been answered”

The subject I’ve chosen for this week is in itself historic and famous, as is the author, let alone the cover imagery: Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy.

And the winner is… Cover B!

I found this a close call this week. In a near-second place is cover A, and iconic and famous piece of artwork depicting the legendary poet Dante. That said, B won the day for me – having only read Inferno to date and not the complete Divine Comedy, this haunting depiction of one of the circles of hell was my favourite.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with my winner, or does one of the others work better for you? Let me know in the comments!

Next week’s theme is a wrap around cover.

Friday Face-Off – 28th June 2019

The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy and now hosted over at Lynn’s Books. The idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.

This week’s theme is a cover that is striped: “And who decided which people wore the striped pyjamas?”

This week I’ve gone with a book I’ve wanted to read for some time now: The Boy in the Stiped Pyjamas by John Boyne.

And the winner is… Cover D!

Another win for cover D. This particular cover is haunting to me. Knowing a little about the premise of the book, though I have yet to read it, only adds to this. A dark atmosphere dominates in this cover.

This week’s theme is a cover for the Summer Solstice – the longest day of the year.

This week I’ve gone with Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The bright and vibrant colours are massively eye catching. They scream summer to me.

Friday Face-Off – 14th June 2019

The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy and now hosted over at Lynn’s Books. The idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.

This week’s theme is a cover featuring something sweet: “Coraline opened the box of chocolates. The dog looked at them longingly.”

This week I’ve gone for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.

And the winner is… Cover H!

I did like the quirky, modern style of I but H was my run away winner this week. It’s simple and more importantly it screams Roald Dahl to me. Peanut butter and jelly, cheese and pickle, but no pairing is greater than Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake.

Next week’s theme is a cover that makes you think of Summer Solstice – the longest day of they year.

Friday Face-Off – 7th June 2019

The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy and now hosted over at Lynn’s Books. The idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.

This week sees the first Friday Face-Off of June. The theme is a cover that brings to mind summer: “One swallow does not make a summer.”

This week I’ve gone for Jeff Lyndsay’s Dexter is Delicious.

And the winner is… Cover E!

When I started looking at the covers for this one, A was speaking to me – golden Miami sunlight (let’s ignore good old Dexter bound in tape), and the Hawaiian-style shirt. But in the end the simplicity of cover E won through. The crisp white background, the vibrant colours of the doughnuts implying the delicious treats summer brings with it.

Friday Face-Off – 31st May 2019

The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy and now hosted over at Lynn’s Books. The idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.

This week’s theme is one I have been looking forward to sinking my teeth into. And as I have been thoroughly enjoying a comedy fantasy I’ve never read though wanted to for some time, this seemed the perfect time. The theme is a favourite fantasy novel cover of my choosing!

For this theme I picked Good Omens by Sir Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. A highly appropriate choice today given the release of Amazon Prime’s Good Omens series.

And the winner is… A DRAW!

Cover F features as it is another Joe McLaren cover that I happen to own. Such a simplistic but stunning design, I love it. Cover A is my other winner for the week. I love the duality of the cover that features in the story: angel and demon, good and evil, Heaven and Hell, black and white.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with my winner, or does one of the others work better for you? Let me know in the comments!

The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy and now hosted over at Lynn’s Books. The idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.

This week’s theme is a cover with something to do with magic: “Bibbity, Bobbity, Boo!”

For this theme I picked The Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter,

And the winner is… COVER E!

I love this cover – the rich red colour and the repeating pattern is really pleasing on the eye. The geometric style of the cover is simple but effective.

Next week’s theme is a favourite fantasy cover: “Simples.”
